-Made Kaek is an artist hailing from Denpasar and currently residing in Sukawati, Gianyar, Bali. He completed his higher education as a graduate in law from Atma Jaya University in Yogyakarta between the years 1985 and 1991. This endeavor was primarily influenced by his father's profession as a legal practitioner in Denpasar. During his tenure in Yogyakarta, Made Kaek became an integral part of the Bali artisan collective known as "Sanggar Dewata". Here, he learned the art of painting under the guidance of Nyoman Gunarsa (1944-2017), a prominent Balinese artist who lived in Yogyakarta and held a teaching position at the Yogyakarta Institute of the Arts (ISI). After graduating in 1991, Made Kaek returned to Bali to earnestly pursue his artistic aspirations. In the year 2000, he established the Pharos Gallery located in Sukawati. Made Kaek's artistic process is characterized by a sincere harmony with his inner reflections. During moments of tranquil introspection, he often experiences vivid visions - visual manifestations of formless beings shrouded in mystery. Though initially perplexing, he eventually embraced these visions, realizing their imperative need for realization. These manifestations take shape as singular or grouped entities, adorned with one or more eyes, wide mouths, and varying numbers of limbs. They materialize and dissolve like fleeting apparitions in mist. Made Kaek's creative impulse revolves around the goal of capturing these ethereal figures onto paper or canvas - a genuine desire to depict the countenance of these imaginative entities. Reflecting on his methodology, he shares, "The artworks I create are the fruits of instant visual insights derived from introspection. These artworks are also inspired by the environment around me, including the motifs seen on Bali's sculptures and carvings that adorn my living space. These elements resonate with my social interactions, fostering relationships with diverse individuals and experiences, thus facilitating my profound journey of learning."
